It’s an important step in language learning is to ensure that students quickly develop a useful vocabulary bank, are able to recognise German conjunctions and connectives, and are confident with the meaning of those words in their first / home language, so that they can produce more detailed and descriptive language and more complex sentences and texts as soon as possible. Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning 35 conjunctions and connectives all at once though - this is more of a longer-term reference resource that students can use to audit their developing German vocabulary, and it is definitely the case that frequent and regular use in real-world practical contexts is far more successful at embedding vocabulary into longer-term memory. EFL ESL English Fruits Flashcards Posters These English fruits flashcards / posters create an instant introduction to 25 fruits in English in the classroom. They are perfect for developing English language and literacy skills, really getting the most from classroom display. They introduce learners to a range of fruits in English from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with both the ‘look’ of English words, and how sounds are represented in the written form. There are 25 fruits in either the singular or plural form using the definite article. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from, other languages learners may already know, or are learning, helps them become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts. This is really useful for both current and later learning. It doesn’t matter if some of the fruits don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the posters provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in English. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of new and unknown words from visual clues or prompts. Along the way, learners can suggest other fruits to add to the display, and may even choose to try some fruits they haven’t tasted before. There are 20 common English Christmas words with pictures that I’ve found ideal for children learning English. I’ve used a blend of definite article and indefinite article and there are some plurals too. I use this to stimulate discussion about articles, the lack of gender in English (which is often quite contrary to many learners’ first language), and forming the plural in English. This set features ten differentiated word searches, focusing on a wide range of German Christmas vocabulary, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The searches offer a really useful learning opportunity - enabling learners to engage with German Christmas vocabulary, which is a great springboard for discussion on Christmas traditions and practices in Germany and other German-speaking countries, comparing them to other traditions and practices students know, but also working on reading, writing, spelling and German language skills in general. Students are able to identify which direction words are located in within the grid by referring to the arrow key. I’ve found lesson around the Christmas period are a great time for revisiting and practicing language and structures we’ve looked at over the semester. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling in English in general, and certainly in English numbers in particular. The questions range in complexity and challenge, not only in terms of calculation, but also in terms of the level of English - they are definitely aimed at advanced beginner English and students moving into intermediate English, rather than new or recent beginners. Most learners will be able to infer meaning from context and images, which have a real UK-Christmas theme, such as mince pies and Christmas crackers, and vocabulary is repeated throughout, giving learners a chance to familiarize themselves with it. Nonetheless, it can be useful to read through the questions with the whole class first to check everyone is able to access the language, and therefore the activity, successfully. BACK TO SCHOOL ITALIAN GREETINGS BUONGUIORNO BUNTING BANNERS It’s great to create a new look for the new school year - I use bunting / banners not only to create a real Italian look and feel in the learning environment, but also to promote everyday language and core vocabulary for learners of all ages. Bunting / banners work well throughout the entire school year, but definitely has a celebratory back to school feel!
